Squaring the Circle is a musical answer on Pi, a key work by artist Johan de Wilde and part of the S.M.A.K. collection. It is a piece for 4 percussionists and electronics.
H.V.H. manipulated Pi by using the sequence of numbers mainly to create chaos and unpredictability.
Visually there is a link with the vertical aspect of Johan De Wilde’s work through the choice of a set of tubular bells per player and a reference to the title through the large number of round instruments on stage such as 2 timpani, 2 bass drums, 8 gongs, cymbals etc. .
In reference to the title, it was a challenge to shape the idea offighting squares and circles. Elsewhere a canon of circles can be heard and in still other places you hear harmonic or melodic squares.
The struggle for a sense of freedom, naturalness and directness is central to all her compositions. By also using Pi at times for the rhythmic organization, a sense of unpredictability and freedom naturally arises. Sometimes that freedom is noted tightly, sometimes a little less tightly to completely free.

Despite the length and variety offered by this release, a few general techniques or patterns are present throughout. Most notable is the interaction between Thomas and Wright, with the former playing in his signature dense and percussive style while the latter provides bursts of gritty notes on the alto. Wright’s wailing is an unconventional counterpoint to Thomas’s classicism.

This music gives me some kind of peace of mind, it is very delicate and often pleasing. Reminds me of Arvo Pärt. Thank you for sharing. Bernhard schumusik (Bernhard Schumacher)
